HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 24, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team battled Western Connecticut State University to a 0-0 draw in the regular season home finale for the Ducks. Stevens now holds a 10-5-1 overall record heading into its final match of the season at Elmira College on October 27 before the Empire 8 Conference Championship at the beginning of November.
Stevens controlled most of the possession throughout the first 45 minutes of play but were never able to capitalize on its opportunities. The Ducks took four shots in the first half, two of which were blocked by West Conn defenders.
WCSU put one shot on goal in the first half but junior
Melissa Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) recorded one of her three saves in the contest.
Both teams played smothering defense in the match, challenging numerous shots and making precise tackles.
In the second half, the Ducks seemed to seize momentum offensively, outshooting the Colonials, 7-2, but a goalie change by WCSU appeared to be a timely move.
Caitlin Avery entered the match in the second half and stopped five shots, three in that stanza.
Stevens' best opportunities came in the final five minutes of regulation but a shot by senior forward
Brittany Odgers (Roseland, N.J.) was saved and fellow senior midfielder
Nicole Serino (Parsippany, N.J.) put a strike off the crossbar with two minutes left before overtime.
In the second overtime, junior midfielder
Lindsay Stoll (Bellevue, Wash.) and sophomore forward
Ann Heine (Sammamish, Wash.) had open chances to end the game with less than four minutes remaining but both attempts sailed high.
The Ducks took 17 shots to West Conn's 10, while the Colonials held a slim edge in corners, 5-4.
After Saturday's game against Elmira, Stevens will travel to Ithaca College for the conference tournament on November 3 and 4. The Ducks will take on Nazareth College at 1:30 p.m. on the third for the first semifinal match.
