ONEONTA, N.Y. (September 15, 2012) – The different Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer student-athletes scored in a 3-1 road victory over Hartwick College in both teams' Empire 8 Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. Since joining the Empire 8 in 2007, Stevens has yet to lose to the Hawks in six matches, and has outscored Hartwick, 12-3. The Ducks are now 5-1 on the season.
In a statistically even match-up between the conference rivals, Stevens took advantage of its opportunities in the shots category, putting in three of 10 on the afternoon. Hartwick slightly edged the Ducks, 11-10, in the contest. The Hawks were also awarded eight corner kicks to Stevens' two, including three in the first few minutes of the game but were unable to capitalize on the chances.
Freshman forward
Carly Bean (Williamson, N.Y.) put the Ducks on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute off a pass from senior midfielder
Brittany Odgers (Roseland, N.J.). Bean took the pass from Odgers on the left side of the box and netted the shot over the head of Hartwick's goalkeeper, Hope Brown.
Bean would then link up with sophomore forward
Georgia Johnson (Freehold, N.J.) 21 minutes later to put Stevens up 2-0 for what would be the eventual game-winning score. Bean's centering pass found Johnson in the middle of the box, who headed the feed in for the two-goal advantage.
Johnson's goal would turn out to be the game-winner due to Hartwick scoring late in the contest after Stevens went up by three goals.
The Ducks' final marker came from junior back
Lindsay Stoll (Bellevue, Wash.) on a blast that would skip over the head of Brown as she attempted to make the save. Stoll registered her first goal of the season with that shot in the 50th minute.
Hartwick's picked up its only goal in the 70th minute but time was not on the Hawks' side for a comeback.
Freshman
Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.) earned her third win in as many starts for the Ducks with one save in 45 minutes. Junior
Melissa Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) stopped three shots and allowed one goal in the final 45 minutes of action.
The Ducks will be back on the pitch on September 18 when they host Farmingdale State College at 4 p.m.
