Box Score 2 HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 15, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team earn another spilt in as many days at its home Ducks Classic in Canavan Arena on Saturday. The Ducks took all three sets in their opener against FDU-Florham, but were then swept by Swarthmore College in the finale. Stevens finished third overall in the six-team tournament and senior opposite hitter
Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) was voted to the All-Tournament Team.
Match One – Stevens 3, FDU-Florham 0
In the straight sets sweep of the Devils, 25-15, 25-6, 25-10, junior outside hitter
Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) recorded a .588 hitting percentage with 10 kills in 17 attempts with no errors. Caulson also added 10 digs and four service aces in the match.
Senior middle hitter
Jillian Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa.) was nearly as impressive with nine kills in 18 chances to go along with just one error (.444 percentage). Kowalska chipped in seven kills with five digs and hit at a .385 clip.
The tandem of setters, junior
Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman
Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) combined for 34 assists. Gates recorded 19, while Shelton tallied 15. Liberos
Hannah Gasper (Bourne, Mass.) and
Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) each registered eight digs.
As a team, Stevens hit for a .369 percentage (38 kills, seven errors, 84 attempts).
Match Two – Swarthmore 3, Stevens 0
The Ducks battled the tournament championships throughout the match but eventually fell, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18. Freshman outside hitter
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) posted seven kills without any errors for a .412 hitting percentage, while Kowalska led all players with 14 kills and added 11 digs.
Gates recorded a match-high 36 assists with 11 digs, while Caulson nearly tallied a double-double with 10 digs and eight kills.
Gasper finished up her afternoon with a nine-dig effort, and Salmins tallied six digs.
The Ducks play again on September 22 in the first of three Empire 8 Conference Crossover tournaments at Hartwick College. Stevens will take on Hartwick and Ithaca College.
Swarthmore won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record and also touted the tournament's Most Valuable Player in Madison Heppe. Kat Montemurro from Swarthmore also made the All-Tournament Team.
Buffalo State College also finished 4-0 but played more sets than the Garnet to place second overall and earned two all-tournament nods. Sherrell McLean and Kelsey Bashore both landed on the team after receiving a majority of the votes from the coaches.
Kean University's Jen Espinal rounded out the post tournament accolades as the Cougars finished with a 2-2 mark. Both York College (Pa.) and FDU-Florham were 0-4.
