Women’s Volleyball Sweeps First Empire 8 Crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ONEONTA, N.Y. (September 22, 2012) – In the first of three Empire 8 Conference Crossovers this season, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team recorded sweeps over Hartwick College and Ithaca College to post a 2-0 mark in the conference. With the two victories, Stevens has now won three of its last four matches this year and are just one of two teams in the E8 with no blemishes in the loss column.

Match One: Stevens 3, Hartwick 0

In the opening sweep of the Hawks, 25-23, 25-13, 25-18, junior setter Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) handed out a team-best 27 assists to go along with eight digs and three blocks. Senior opposite hitter Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) also posted eight digs and three blocks, and paced the Ducks with 13 kills.

Freshman outside hitter Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) recorded the best hitting percentage in the match at .312 on eight kills in 16 attempts with three errors, while sophomore middle hitter Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) controlled the net with five blocks and added six kills.

Junior libero Hannah Gasper (Bourne, Mass.) put together the top defensive effort for Stevens with nine digs.

Match Two: Stevens 3, Ithaca 0

The Ducks continued their strong play with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-20, sweep of the Bombers to wrap up the first conference crossover. Gates recorded 23 assists, four aces, four digs and three blocks adding to her impressive afternoon.

Kowalska nearly registered a double-double with 13 digs and seven kills, while Hall hit at a .385 clip with seven kills.

Thomas chipped in five kills, while junior outside hitter Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) tallied eight kills and four digs.

Gasper once again was solid from the back row with seven digs.

Stevens returns home for its Duck Country match against Haverford College on September 26 at 7:30 p.m. before hosting the Ducks Invite over the weekend.
