RIVERDALE, N.Y. (August 31, 2012) – In a rematch of the Hudson River rivalry for the 2012 season opener for both teams, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team, ranked 18th in the country, came away with a thrilling 3-2 victory over New York University in Riverdale, N.Y. on August 31. Stevens led for the entirety of the contest but nearly went to extra time if not for a heads up play by junior forward
Kyle Stephens (Lansing, Mich.) in the waning minutes of regulation.
In the 88th minute of the contest, an NYU player slipped a shot past senior goalkeeper
Teegan Kelly (Charlton, N.Y.) but Stephens was waiting on the end line to clear the ball out of the box and preserve the victory for the Ducks. Stevens avenged a 1-0 loss to the Violets on September 3 in Hoboken with the victory this afternoon.
Stevens took a 1-0 advantage just 13:57 into the contest on a through ball from sophomore forward/midfielder
Ann Heine (Sammamish, Wash.) that found freshman forward
Carly Bean (Williamson, N.Y.). The goal marks Bean's first of her collegiate career.
The Ducks then mounted a 2-0 lead off a free kick straight out from 20 yards from junior forward/midfielder
Jessie Wos (Mukwonago, Wis.) just under 13 minutes from the first Stevens tally.
NYU cut its deficit in half with five minutes remaining in the opening session of the game on one of two goals scored by Melissa Menta. Menta received a pass Cami Crawford that left Menta one-on-one with Kelly.
Despite surrendering the first goal of the contest, Kelly made five saves in all 90 minutes of action to earn her first victory of the season.
As the second stanza got under way, Heine pushed Stevens' lead back out to two scores at the 54:51 mark. Heine ran down a pass from Wos into the box and distributed the ball into the back of the net to give the Ducks a 3-1 advantage.
The Violets would not go down without a fight as Menta cleaned up a rebound off a save from Kelly with 23 minutes remaining in the match. Menta's first strike was turned away but she followed up to give NYU an opportunity to tie the game up later in the contest.
NYU managed to take three more shots after its second goal but one sailed wide left, another was saved by Kelly and the final attempt was sent out by Stephens to push the Ducks' consecutive unbeaten streak to 14 games dating back to last season.
Stevens controlled possession for the majority of the game but a pesky NYU squad kept the Ducks on edge for the entire contest. The Ducks outshot the Violets, 20-13, and held a distinct advantage in corner kicks, 7-1.
Stevens will be back in action on September 5 against Eastern University for the team's home opener starting at 4:30 p.m. The Ducks took down Eastern, 1-0, in double overtime last season in St. David's, Pa.
