Salisbury, New Paltz Hand Women’s Volleyball Two Losses at NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. (September 1, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball wrap up their opening weekend at the NYU Labor Day Invitational with two losses against Salisbury University and SUNY New Paltz on Sunday. Stevens was swept by Salisbury and went to four sets against New Paltz to finish up the two-day tournament with a 0-4 overall record.

Match One: Salisbury University 3, Stevens 0

Stevens dropped straight sets to the Sea Gulls, 25-14, 25-18, 28-26, in the opening match of the second day at the NYU Labor Day Invitational, falling to 0-3 on the early season. Sophomore middle hitter Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) put together the best performance for the Ducks with seven kills in 13 attempts (.538 hitting percentage) and added three digs. Hall has led Stevens in hitting percentage throughout the first three matches this year.

Junior libero Hannah Gasper (Bourne, Mass.) tallied her best match of the young season defensively, tallying 17 digs. Classmate and setter Samantha Gates (Wilmington, Del.) handed out 22 assists to lead the team and posted eight digs and four kills in the loss.

Ducks' junior Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) each posted five kills in the loss, while senior Jillian Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in six kills. Caulson also recorded five digs.

Sophomore libero Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) picked up seven digs and senior opposite hitter Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) added four kills and four digs for Stevens. Freshman setter Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) paced the Ducks with three service aces.

Match Two: SUNY New Paltz 3, Stevens 1

The Ducks battled with New Paltz but wound up on the wrong end of a four-set decision, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23, to conclude the NYU Invitational. Five different players recorded double-digit digs in the setback.

Kowalska posted the overall best match for the Ducks with 13 digs, 10 kills and five total blocks, while Thomas registered 11 kills, four digs and three aces.

Gates once again dished out a team-best 31 assists to go along with 12 digs. Caulson tallied 13 digs, three blocks and three kills.

Both liberos, Salmins and Gasper each dug out 12 and 11 attempts, respectively, while Hall and Barrett chipped in six kills apiece.

Stevens returns to the court on September 5 when the team travels to Richard Stockton College for a 7 p.m. start.
