MADISON, N.J. (September 5, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell by a 4-3 final to Drew University at Ranger Stadium Wednesday night in Madison, N.J. The Ducks fought all the way back from 4-1 to 4-3 but were unable to find the equalizer in the loss. Junior
Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.), Meg Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and
Mary Nikish (Pittsford, N.Y.) all scored for the Ducks who drop to 1-2 on the year.
The Rangers (3-0) took a 1-0 edge 5:13 into the action behind a score from senior forward Sarah Charles (Long Valley, N.J.). Charles took a shot that Stevens goalie
Kaitlin McClymont (Corpus Chrisi, Texas) was able to stop but, the veteran was able to put it in after a scramble in front.
Chavez pulled Stevens event at one-all when she put in her own rebound 13 minutes into the action, but Charles tallied back-to-back goals for the Rangers 2:06 apart and Drew went into the break with a 3-1 edge.
The Rangers pushed their advantage to three goals 1:04 into the second half but the Ducks pulled within one behind markers from Nikish and Traub at 57:15 and 65:17. Junior forward
Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) assisted the Nikish goal, and Nikish assisted the Traub tally.
The Ducks were able to generate a pair of corners after pulling within one but could not convert. Stevens ended with a 29-21 edge in shots and a 14-6 margin in corners. McClymont made 12 saves for the Ducks, while Drew goalie Christiana Carlini (Amerst, N.H.) made 18 stops.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. when it hosts the newest Empire 8 member, Houghton College at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
