WEST POINT, N.Y. (January 19, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team dominated the competition at West Point on Saturday, sweeping its six matches to open the 2013 portion of the calendar. The Ducks knocked off the City College of New York, Swarthmore College, Queens College, Hunter College, the University of Florida and the United States Military Academy on Saturday.
The sabre squad had the best day for Stevens. Freshman
Zoe To (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) was 13-0, senior captain
Juliet Turalski (Maplewood, N.J.) was 12-0, and senior
Chelsea Shupe (Montague, N.J.) was 11-2.
At foil, senior
Trinity Sheppard (Frederic, Md.) led the way with 10 wins. Classmate
Stephanie Arouh (South Brunswick, N.J.) had nine victories,
Taia Harrison (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and
Caroleen Chen (Bedminster, N.J.) both had eight, and
Jane Cruz (Oakland, N.J.) finished a perfect 6-0 on the day.
There were plenty of good performances at epee as well.
Briana Nieradka (West Windsor, N.J.) was a perfect 10-0, while
Krystal Perkins (Palmdale, Calif.) and
Deanna Quackenbush (Selden, N.Y.) had eight wins each.
Rebecca Merrick (Bayonne, N.J.) had six wins and
Colleen Pelech (Waldwick, N.J.) – fresh off setting a world skateboarding record – finished with four victories on Saturday.
The Ducks will host their alumni match on Sunday and then travel to the University of New Hampshire on the 27th.
