HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 23, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology was shutout at home by nationally ranked No. 11 The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, 3-0, on a cloud and blustery evening in Hoboken. With the loss, Stevens is now 8-7 overall, while TCNJ improves 13-1-1 on the season.
The Lions posted their game-winning goal just 2:37 in the match on the sixth goal of the season by Leigh Applestein off a pass from Sarah Marion. Marion sent a cross from the right side of the field through the 18-yard box to Applestein who beat Stevens sophomore goalkeeper
Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.).
Despite allowing three goals on the evening, Ting made 13 saves on the evening which included numerous diving saves that negated a few more opportunities for TCNJ to score.
TCNJ's second goal came in the 17th minute after Katie Lindacher raced past the Ducks' defense to set up a one-on-one chance against Ting. Lindacher's low strike beat a sprawling Ting for her sixth marker on the year.
After halftime, the Lions put their third goal on the board 7:49 into the second half to round out the offense in the contest. Taylor Lusardi sent a long shot from 25 yards out over the outstretched arms of Ting after the Ducks failed to clear the ball out of the defensive zone.
Stevens' best chance to score came with just over nine minutes left in regulation on a blast from freshman
Raba Nassif (Northvale, N.J.). Nassif sent a shot towards the top left corner of the frame but TCNJ goalkeeper Kendra Griffith made a leaping stop to preserve the shutout.
The Ducks were outshot in the match, 27-11, and allowed eight Lions' corners to just one for Stevens.
Stevens heads up to Ithaca College on Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference showdown with the No. 5 Bombers in Ithaca, N.Y. After another away contest at Western Connecticut State University on Halloween, the Ducks return home to host Elmira College for Senior Day on November 2.
