ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 3, 2013) – In a make-up Empire 8 Conference match from earlier this season, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team came away with a 3-1 victory over Nazareth College in Elmira, N.Y. on Thursday evening. Tonight's match was scheduled to be played at Hartwick College in the last conference crossover but was cancelled due to a power outage.

Stevens (16-4, 3-0 Empire 8) took down Nazareth (14-4, 2-1), 27-25, 18-25, 25-15, 25-19, to take over sole possession of first place in the conference. The Ducks nearly reached 100 digs in the contest with 96 and tallied 51 kills to 47 for the Golden Flyers.

Senior Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) posted a double-double with a match-high 42 assists and 13 digs. Gates also recorded five kills and two service aces. Classmate Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) paced Stevens with 12 kills and added seven digs.

Freshmen Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) and Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) each registered 10 kills in the victory. Tobin added 18 digs with two aces, while Sciarra hit at a .333 clip and chipped in four digs.

Defensively, the Ducks were led by sophomore Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.), who led all players with 25 digs. Junior Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) was close behind Shelton with 22 more digs for her 11th 20-plus dig performance this season.

Junior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) added eight kills with four digs and four total blocks, while sophomore Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) pitched in five kills on 11 swings and three digs.

Stevens will be back in Speidel Gymnasium tomorrow for another conference match against St. John Fisher College at 4 p.m. as part of the second Empire 8 crossover this season. On Saturday, the Ducks square off with Elmira at 10 a.m. and wrap up the weekend with a 12:30 p.m. showdown against Alfred University.
