Stevens Reston trips for Ultimate Frisbee

This past weekend, Stevens Ducks made the trip to Reston, Virginia for the first annual Hucks Off the Hilltop college ultimate tournament. There were 16 teams involved, and the weather was cold and windy for the entire weekend.

The Ducks' first game was against eventual champions, Lehigh University. Although this first game started at 1PM, the wind and the cold were very much still a factor. Upwind throws floated a lot, and Lehigh came down with a lot of the deep shots. Lehigh ended up winning 13-5.

The second Saturday game saw the Ducks face the University of Richmond. Wind was an equalizer in this game, with both teams consistently scoring in the downwind end zone. Breaks from both sides came in pairs before Richmond took a 1 point lead late in the second half. Stevens put in strong lines and closed out the game with 2 straight breaks before the time cap, winning 10-9.

Stevens' last Saturday game was against an athletic Virginia Tech squad. The wind continued to be a factor, pushing discs downwind and making goals in the upwind end zone rare. In the end Virginia Tech's offense made less mistakes and took advantage of the Ducks' turnovers to take the 13-6 win.

Virginia was slightly less windy, but still very cold for Sunday morning's games. Stevens took on George Washington University on the same fields. GW's handlers immediately took advantage of the lesser winds, bucking deep and scoring often in both directions. Stevens was less successful with their deep shots, and wasn't able to capitalize on GW turnovers. Sunday's first game ended in favor of GW, 15-8.

Out of contention for a championship, the Ducks went on to play Delaware-X. Tired from the previous game, Stevens got off to a poor start and found themselves down 4-0. They quickly pulled it together and rallied, scoring 8 of the next 9 points and securing a 15-10 win.

Stevens' last game of the weekend served as an opportunity to open up lines and give new players an opportunity to showcase their skills. A lot of talent and athleticism was on display this game, though the Ducks fell in the end to Maryland-Y 15-8.
