This weekend, Stevens Ultimate competed in it's first tournament in 2014. The Ducks were off to West Windsor, NJ to compete in the Spring Awakening tournament put on by Ultiment. Saturday consisted of pool play, where Stevens would face off against Queens-Kingston University, Columbia University, Wentworth, and Bentley. The Ducks had a great start against Queens-Kingston, and held strong through the entire game. Senior Captain
Andrew Misthos led the team with 5 assists in the game, while senior
Jon Lee and Junior
Marques Brownlee each had three scores on the way to a 12-10 victory. The next game against Columbia was tougher for the team, and they faced a 7-2 deficit at halftime.
Andrew Misthos and
Marques Brownlee led the Ducks on a second half charge (each with 4 assists) to bring the final score to a much more manageable 12-10 defeat. The third opponent of the day was Wentworth who proved to be a less experienced team, allowing Stevens to give some of the less seasoned players more field time.
Zack Smith led the team with 3 scores in this game, while
Andrew Misthos posted 3 assists leading the ducks to a 13-6 win. The final game of the day was against Bentley, a team that is currently ranked in the top 5 Division III programs. Again, Stevens had a slow start and faced a 7-2 halftime deficit. The Ducks battled hard out of halftime and rallied 5 straight scores, tying the game at 7-7. That level of play was simply too draining to continue, and when the substitutes were put in, Stevens fell behind slightly, eventually succumbing to a 12-9 defeat.
On Sunday, the temperature had dropped significantly, but the wind was far less powerful. The Ducks were up against an experienced and talented University of Delaware team in the Quarterfinals. Stevens struggled out of the gate, and were once again trailing 7-2 at halftime. This time, the Ducks couldn't find the opportunities to start the comeback, and were not able to fully close the gap. Although the Ducks lost 13-8, there is something to be said for playing well against a much deeper team from a much larger school. The final game of the day was against The College of New Jersey in the fifth place game. Stevens has historically played very well against the in-conference rival, and this was no exception. The team started off hot, going up 4-2, but allowed TCNJ to stay in the game but never take the lead. Led by
Marques Brownlee's 4 assists and 2 scores, the Ducks won the game 12-7.
Stevens Ultimate is next in action next weekend at the Garden State Invite in Mercerville, NJ.
