Women’s Volleyball Stays Perfect in E8 with 3-1 Win vs. St. John Fisher

ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 4, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team raised its record to 17-4 overall and 4-0 in the Empire 8 Conference with a 3-1 win against St. John Fisher College in the Empire 8 crossover at Elmira College on Friday afternoon. Stevens will complete the conference weekend with two matches tomorrow against Elmira at 10 a.m. and then Alfred University at 12:30 p.m.

The Ducks rolled through their three set victories, 25-18, 25-14, 25-10, and lost the second set, 25-19. Stevens outhit Fisher by nearly .130 points (.203 to .075) and used eight solo blocks to come away with its 10th neutral site win of the season. Three Ducks went over 11 kills apiece, while three others eclipsed 15 digs.

Senior Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) posted a solid statistical match with 46 assists to lead all players with nine digs and three solo blocks. Junior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) led Stevens with 13 kills on a .233 hitting percentage to go along with five digs and a block.

Freshman Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) tallied 12 kills, while senior Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) chipped in 11 more. Caulson also added nine digs.

Freshman Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) just missed a double-double with 20 digs and nine kills, while sophomore Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) recorded a team-best .273 hitting percentage with seven kills on 22 swings. Thomas also registered three total blocks and two digs.

Junior Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) performed well in the backline with a match-high 25 digs and sophomore Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) pitched in 15 more digs.

Fisher was led offensively by Rachael Kline who had 17 kills, and Erin Crandall registered 22 digs.

With two victories tomorrow, Stevens puts itself in a great position to host the Empire 8 Championship on November 9 and 10. Watch both matches on Empire8.tv.
