NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (October 9, 2013) – Stevens Institute of Technology dropped a 5-4 decision to host SUNY New Paltz in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, Stevens falls to 7-4 overall, while the Hawks improve to 7-5.

Senior back Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.) and sophomore forward Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led Stevens with two goals apiece, while senior forward Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) notched a pair of assists. Senior back Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) dished out one helper as well.

"New Paltz is a very strong team, and they outplayed us today," Head Field Coach Emily Beach (Hoboken, N.J.) said. "We need to do a better job executing in our defensive circle in order to allow fewer penalty corners, and shots. Ultimately, we need to find a way to keep the ball out of the net. We will learn from this game and move forward to start preparing for St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon."

New Paltz ended with a 30-17 edge in shots and a 16-9 margin in penalty corners.

In the 17th minute, Chavez inserted to Ridge on a penalty corner, and the senior blasted in her shot from the top of the circle to give the Ducks a short-lived 1-0 lead.

New Paltz tied the game at 17:24, but the Ducks responded with Chavez feeding Ridge on the top-right side of the circle via a penalty corner, and Ridge put home her second of the game and fifth of the season.

The Hawks knotted things at two with 5:46 remaining in the first half and took a lead they would not relinquish less than two minutes into the second.

Brook tied things at three for Stevens at 39:14, knocking in a deflected cross for her sixth goal of the year, but the hosts came back with two in a row to open a 5-3 lead with 13:24 on the clock. The fifth and final score for New Paltz came from senior Danielle Conklin who finished with three markers and a new SUNY New Paltz single-season goals mark with 17.

The Ducks were able to knock in their final goal of the contest as time expired on a penalty corner. Chavez inserted to Ridge, who flipped to Traub. The senior wound up and ripped a shot that Brook was able to put in for her second of the contest.

Stevens will return to action Saturday when it hosts Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher College at 1 p.m. The Ducks will honor their seniors prior to the match and all the action can be seen live at www.Empire8.TV.
