Women’s Volleyball Splits to Open NYS Challenge

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (November 1, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball split its matches on the first day of the New York State Challenge hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday night. Stevens fell to No. 24 Clarkson University to open the evening and then swept RIT to finish the night with a 25-6 record.

Clarkson 3, Stevens 0

In just the second match of the season that the Ducks failed to win a set, 26-24, 25-15, 25-13, junior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) and freshman Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) paced Stevens offensively with seven kills apiece. Hall hit .263 with three digs, while Sciarra added a dig in the loss.

Senior Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) dished out 26 assists with 11 digs and two service aces, while junior Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) led all players with 21 digs. With the 21 digs in the opener, Salmins became just the second Stevens women's volleyball player to go over 600 digs in a season.

Senior Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) each put down six kills. Causlon also contributed three digs and Tobin tallied nine more.

Sophomore Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) hit a team-best .333 with five kills in 12 swings to go along with three digs.

Clarkson (29-6) hit .324 in the match, while the Ducks hit at just a .123 clip.

Stevens 3, RIT 0

In the sweep of RIT (14-24), 25-15, 25-19, 25-13, Stevens outhit the Tigers, .133 to .000. Tobin led the Ducks in the nightcap with eight kills, a match-high 21 digs and three aces, while Caulson was close behind with seven kills, nine digs and three solo blocks.

Gates dished out 21 more assists and Salmins registered 12 more digs. Sciarra added four kills with three block assists.

Hall scored three aces and two kills, while Thomas pitched in three kills. Sophomore Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) added eight digs.

Stevens will play the University of Rochester tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the regular season. The Ducks will then host the Empire 8 Conference Tournament on November 9 and 10 with their opening match slated to take on Ithaca College at 12 p.m.
