CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (February 3, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team competed at the Sollee Invitational Sunday at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, compiling an overall mark of 1-4 but earning a big win over powerhouse Brandeis University.
Leading the Ducks with winning records were junior
Briana Nieradka (West Windsor, N.J.) in Epee and senior
Juliet Turalski (Maplewood, N.J.) in Sabre. Nieradka was 13-5 overall, while Turalski notched an overall mark of 10-8.
The Ducks earned a big 16-11 win over Brandeis – a team that has fared extremely well against some of the toughest Division III foes in the nation.
Despite going 0-4 in the rest their matchups Sunday, the Ducks battled top Division I institutions in Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, Boston College and Duke University. In an 18-9 loss to Penn, Stevens' Epee team earned a 5-4 win, and the Foil group was 5-4 against BC. Stevens fell to Brown 18-9, Duke 20-7, the BC Eagles 18-9 and 19-8 to Brown.
The Ducks also dropped an extremely competitive matchup to rival and host MIT.
Stevens will return to action on February 10 in Baltimore, Md. at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Team Championship.
