NAPERVILLE, Ill. (March 8, 2013)
– Senior Alina Duran (West New York, N.J.) of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's indoor track & field team earned All-American status at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in the weight throw. Out of fifteen competitors in the event, Duran finished eighth overall, the same spot she entered for the championships at North Central College.

On her final throw of six attempts, Duran recorded her best mark of the day with a toss of 17.09 meters (56 feet, 1 inch). She finished just .02 meters from seventh and .34 meters from sixth to become the first Stevens track & field athlete to garner All-American recognition.

She began the weight throw with a mark of 16.59 and 16.29 meters before eclipsing 17 meters at 17.06. After throws of 16.17 and 16.01m on attempts four and five, Duran posted her best mark at 17.09.

“Duran's NCAA All-American honor caps a phenomenal career at Stevens. She has impacted the program in so many ways and will be missed.” said head coach Justin Wood (Weehawken, N.J.).

“She stepped up on her third throw to move from 10th to eighth. It shows her resolve under pressure, she was not willing to settle for anything less than a spot on the podium.”

The top eight competitors of the event were named All-American. Samantha Loew of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the weight throw with a mark of 18.90 meters (62'.25”). Allison Devor of Monmouth University (Ill.) entered as the top seed but placed second at 18.51 meters.

Duran is the first individual in the history of the women's indoor program at Stevens to reach the national meet and also the first All-American. After a one-season stint in 1997-98, the program went on hiatus until 2003-04 and has existed ever since.

Stevens' outdoor season begins on March 23 at Monmouth University, the same location that kicked off the indoor season for the Ducks. Duran reached the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the weight throw as well.
