Women’s Lacrosse Topped by Fisher; Winning Streak Ends at Four Game

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 19, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team saw its four-game winning streak stopped by St. John Fisher College Friday afternoon, falling by a final of 17-9 in an Empire 8 contest.
 
The loss drops the Ducks to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Fisher moves to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8. Ithaca College leads the conference standings, Fisher is in second and Stevens is in third.
 
After the Cardinals jumped on top early, senior midfielder Joey Galligan (Burlingame, Calif.) scored to tie the game at one apiece six minutes into the action. From that point on, Fisher scored the next five goals to open a 6-1 margin with 6:59 left in the first, with junior Taylor Hughes (Watertown, N.Y.) notching two.
 
Senior midfielder Spencer Waybright (West Hartford, Conn.) ended the run with an unassisted tally for Stevens with 6:43 left in the period, but two more Cardinal goals made it 8-2. Freshman midfielder Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tallied her first of the day  to trim the lead to five, but Hughes scored with 22 ticks in the half and sent St. John Fisher into the locker room with a 9-3 edge.
 
The Cardinals scored the first four goals of the second half – three by sophomore midfielder Samantha Barton (Rochester, N.Y.) – to open a 13-3 edge, with sophomore attack Andrea Dragoni (Easton, Pa.) halting the run for the Ducks with 19:33 on the clock.
 
Freshman Chrissy Cook (Black River, N.Y.) netted a pair for Fisher to make it a 15-4 game, but Stevens did not quit, getting markers from Galligan, freshman attack Jaimie Mastrogiacomo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Wilcox to get within eight goals at 15-8.
 
Hughes quieted the Stevens run and the final two Duck goals came from junior midfielder Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and Waybright.
 
Dragoni, Wilcox, Waybright and Galligan all had multiple points for Stevens with Wilcox and Galligan each leading Stevens with three points. Rafferty led Stevens with six draw controls, while Galligan, Waybright and sophomore defender Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) each had multiple ground balls.
 
Senior goalie Meg Collins (Marshfield, Mass.) took the loss for the Ducks, making six saves. Junior Mel Welcome (Winsted, Conn.) made four saves for Stevens.
 
Hughes had eight points (six goals, two assists) to lead Fisher, while Barton added four tallies. Senior Melissa Leonhard (Penfield, N.Y.) had two goals and a team-high five draw controls. Freshman Nicole Hart (Syracuse, N.Y.) notched eight saves to earn the win for the Cardinals.
 
Fisher scored 19 goals on 29 shots, and the Ducks had nine markers on 20 shots. The Cardinals ended with a 21-13 edge in ground balls, while the Ducks won 15 of the 27 draw controls.
 
Stevens will return to action Saturday when it hosts Nazareth College at 1 p.m. in the team's annual Duck Country event. All the action will be webcast live at www.Empire8.TV.
