Women’s Lacrosse Drops 10-8 Decision vs. Naz; Rafferty Gets 100th Career Goal

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 20, 2013) – Junior midfielder Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) scored the 100th goal of her career but it was not enough as Nazareth College women's lacrosse team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 10-8 Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex.

The loss drops the Ducks to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Nazareth moves to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the Empire 8.
 
Stevens jumped on top 4:30 into the game on the back of a goal from freshman midfielder Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), but Nazareth countered with three-straight scores to open a 3-1 edge with 10:59 left in the opening stanza.
 
Rafferty netted her 99th with 10:30 left in the first, and following Nazareth's fourth goal, the Ducks closed the first with three-straight goals to take a 5-4 lead into the break. Senior midfielder Spencer Waybright (West Hartford, Conn.), Wilcox and Rafferty had the tallies, with Rafferty's serving as the 100th of her career.
 
After Nazareth took the lead with two early second-half goals, Wilcox tied the game with 20:33 left, but the Golden Flyers ran off three consecutive scores to open a 9-6 margin with 9:29 on the clock.
 
Senior midfielder Joey Galligan (Burlingame, Calif.) brought Stevens back within two at the 7:59 mark, but the Nazareth defense held the Ducks off the board for the next four-plus minutes and received an insurance goal from senior Megan Cregan (Rochester, N.Y.) with 3:18 left.
 
Galligan was able to make the score 10-8 with 2:41 remaining, but Nazareth maintained possession and kept the Ducks scoreless over the final minutes for the victory.
 
Wilcox led Stevens with three goals, while Galligan and Rafferty each had a pair. Waybright finished with one goal and one assist. Rafferty added four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls to her line, while Waybright had three draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore defender Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) picked up four ground balls and notched two caused turnovers, while Wilcox had four draw controls. Galligan added three ground balls to her line.
 
Senior Meg Collins (Marshfield, Mass.) made 13 saves in goal for the Ducks. Her counterpart, junior Tara Prosak (Jamesville, N.Y.) made 13 saves in the win for Naz.
 
Stevens ended with a 31-27 edge in shots, and each squad committed 13 turnovers. Stevens had a 21-16 margin in ground balls and won 16 of the game's 20 draw controls.
 
The Ducks will look to get back in the win column when they visit The College of New Jersey on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
