HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 18, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday evening at Canavan Arena in four sets. With the four-set defeat, Stevens is now 12-1 on the season, while New Paltz improves to 9-5.
The Ducks won the first set, 25-22, but fell in the next three, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12, to a well-rounded New Paltz squad. Stevens struggled offensively, hitting just .079 in the match and allowed 11 service aces to the Hawks. New Paltz eclipsed double-digit kills in all four sets, while Stevens only met that mark once.
Freshman
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) was the lone Duck to notch 10-plus kills with 11 and added six digs. Senior
Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) handed out 23 assists, while junior
Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) posted a team-best 19 digs.
Senior
Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) each added four kills. Caulson also chipped in 12 digs.
Sophomore
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) contributed six kills, while classmate
Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) tallied 11 digs.
The Ducks will look to bounce back this weekend at Hartwick College for the first Empire 8 Conference crossover of the season on the 20th and 21st. Stevens kicks off with Ithaca College at 7 p.m. on the 20th and then takes on Utica College and Nazareth College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
