HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 21, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team improved to 3-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference with a 3-1 victory over Houghton College on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex. Saturday's contest was the conference opener for both teams and the first loss for Houghton this season after a 4-0 start.
Houghton took the first shot of the contest nearly 10 minutes into the first half, but sophomore
Leah Spaulding (San Pedro, Calif.) made the save to keep the match scoreless.
Spaulding picked up her third victory of the season with two saves in the first half before sophomore
Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.) came in as a replacement in the second half. Ting stopped two shots late in the match.
Senior
Bridgette Barden (Redondo Beach, Calif.) recorded for the first shot for Stevens from 25 yards out, but that was also turned away Shawna Sprout in the 16th minute.
With 23 minutes to go in the first half, junior
Ann Heine (Sammamish, Wash.) won a contested pass from junior
Mariah Cleveland (Los Gatos, Calif.) within the 18 and beat Houghton's goalkeeper with a right-footed strike to give Stevens a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks had an opportunity to go up, 2-0, after Heine beat her defender down the left side and sent a cross to freshman
Sydney Jacobsen (Huntington, W. Va.), but Jacobsen's header into the goal was called off after an offsides call nullified the goal with just under 10 minutes left in the half.
In the second half, senior
Becky Wos (Mukwonago, Wis.) gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead with a blast from close to 40 yards out that caught Sprout off her line and went over her head in the 61st minute. Wos approached a loose ball in the middle of the field sent a high-arching shot towards the frame for the insurance goal.
Stevens' third tally of the match came on a give-and-go between freshman
Raba Nassif (Northvale, N.J) and Jacobsen. The duo split the defense and Nassif's pass inside the 18 led Jacobsen to her first collegiate goal with 24 minutes left in regulation.
Houghton scratched the scoreboard with just over three minutes left in regulation on a through ball from Atalie Fite that found Stephany Ellison on a run down the middle of the field.
The Ducks nearly doubled up Houghton in shots, 13-7, although the Highlanders were awarded five corners to four for Stevens.
Next up for Stevens will be Drew University at home on September 25 at 7:30 p.m.
