HAVERFORD, Pa. (September 25, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team went the distance with Haverford College on Wednesday evening but fell in five sets for its second loss this season. Stevens is now 14-2 on the year, while Haverford improves to 9-4 overall.
The Ducks defense tallied 105 digs as a team in the five-set defeat, 19-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12, and four players nearly reached the 20-dig plateau. Leading the way was junior
Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) with 23 digs, while sophomore
Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) recorded 18 more.
Senior
Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) also reached 20-plus digs with 22 in the match and also registered 18 kills and a .295 hitting percentage. Freshman
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) paced Stevens with 20 kills on 60 swings to go along with 18 digs and three service aces.
Senior
Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) controlled the offense with 50 assists and added 11 digs with two kills, while junior
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) contributed 11 kills and hit at a .500 clip with three aces, three digs and three total blocks.
Freshman
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) added seven kills and seven digs in the loss.
Stevens played well in its two set victories with 16 and 18 kills, respectively and hit .342 and .275 in those sets, but never hit above .174 in the three sets the Ducks lost. Stevens never trailed in the third set and held a 22-19 advantage in the second set, but were outscored, 6-1, the rest of the way.
The Ducks will be back in action for four matches this weekend in the Stevens Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Hoboken. Stevens will play NYU and Susquehanna University on Friday night and then takes on Farmingdale State College and Brooklyn College on Saturday. All four matches will be available via live stats and webcast on Empire8.tv.
