MADISON, N.J. (September 4, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team improved its record to 5-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Hunter College and a 3-1 triumph against FDU-Florham in Madison, N.J. on Wednesday evening. Wednesday's tri-match took place at Florham's Ferguson Recreation Center.
Stevens 3, Hunter 0
The Ducks swept Hunter in their first match of the evening, 25-14, 25-17, 25-20. Stevens only trailed four times throughout the entirety of the match and capitalized on 39 total errors by the Hawks. The Ducks outhit Hunter, .212 to .064 and scored with 12 service aces.
Senior
Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) put together the best all-around match for Stevens with 24 assists, six digs, four kills and two blocks. Gates was perfect in kill attempts (4-for-4) and led all players in assists.
Junior
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) and freshman
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) each tallied six kills to tie a team-high. Hall paced the Ducks with five aces and four blocks, while Tobin chipped in nine digs, three assists and two blocks. Hall recorded 13 points in the match and Tobin hit at a .400 clip.
Defensively, junior
Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) registered a match-best 14 digs to lead the Ducks for the fourth straight contest. Sophomore
Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) added five digs and four aces, while senior
Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) contributed five kills.
Stevens 3, FDU-Florham 1
Stevens capped off the evening with a 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, win over the hosts of the tri-match. The Ducks posted their highest hitting percentage of the season at .311 with 47 kills on 122 attempts and just nine errors.
Freshman
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) topped Stevens with 13 kills on 28 swings to go along with three blocks, while Tobin was the second Duck to reach double-digit kills with 10. Tobin tallied 11 digs for a double-double.
Hall added to her evening with nine kills, five digs, three blocks and two aces. She hit an impressive .615 in the match on 13 tries. Gates handed out 28 assists with six digs.
Salmins anchored the defense with 15 digs, and Caulson added five kills. Junior
Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.Y.) played one set and dished out eight assists, while freshman
Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) also saw the floor for a set and recorded four kills and two digs.
Sophomore
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) rounded out the evening with five kills and two blocks.
The Ducks head to Vassar College to play four matches over a two-day span on September 6 and 7. Stevens takes on Vassar and New York University on Friday and then take on Massachusetts Institute of Technology and No. 24 SUNY Cortland on Saturday.
