HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team controlled possession for a majority of the 104-plus-minute double overtime contest with Vassar College in the opening match of the 2013 Stevens Engineering Cup, but Stevens fell, 2-1.
Vassar struck early in the contest, netting the opening goal just 1:32 into the first half off a loose ball inside the 18-yard box. Chloe Wheeler corralled the free ball and ripped a left-footed shot past sophomore
Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.) on the first attempt of the game for either team.
After the score, Stevens controlled pace the rest of the way out in the first half. The Ducks took 10 shots and were award three corners over the next 43-plus minutes of action. Stevens finally knotted the contest up at 1-1 off a rebound from junior
Georgia Johnson (Freehold, N.J.).
Leading up to the score, Stevens took a corner from the left side and Johnson's initial attempt was denied. Fellow junior
Ann Heine (Sammamish, Wash.) settled the deflection and sent another strike towards the goal only to have it turned away by a Vassar defender on the goal line. Johnson remained alert and distributed that rebound into the net for the equalizer.
The Ducks continued to dominate the contest in shots with 15 more in the second half but could never break the tie and went into overtime. A true difference maker in the contest was Brewers goalkeeper Emma Nichols, who stopped 15 shots on the afternoon.
Stevens was awarded a golden opportunity in the first overtime to end the match on a penalty kick with just 2:35 left on the clock but the ensuing shot missed right.
The Brewers ended the contest on a breakaway down the right side by Kamaria Coley. Coley raced past the Stevens defensive line and avoided Ting for an open shot on goal.
The shots were completely dominated by the Ducks, who held a decisive 29-3 advantage. Stevens also took seven corner kicks to none for Vassar.
Stevens squares off with New York University tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the final match of the Engineering Cup. Haverford and Vassar play the opening contest at 12 p.m.
In the other showdown today, NYU defeated Haverford, 1-0, on a late second half goal by Cami Crawford. Haverford took 13 shots to six for the Violets but could not get one past either NYU goalkeeper. Cassie Steinberg started the match and made one save in the first half before Arianna Strome replaced her and made four stops in the second half to earn the win.
