HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 17, 2014)
 – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing program will host its annual Alumnae Match on campus on Sunday, January 19, celebrating the 40th anniversary of women's fencing and women's sports at Stevens.

Women's fencing was the first women's sport on campus, beginning in 1974 for the '74-'75 season, and is currently in its 40th year of competition.

The program has been led from the start by Linda Volkommer-Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.) who has guided the Ducks to double-digit wins 13-straight seasons and 26 overall. Recently, the Stevens women's fencing program has raised the bar, winning the Division III title at the NIWFA twice in the last three years.

The annual Alumnae Match started 35 years ago, as soon as the first-ever women's fencing seniors graduated and has taken place each year since.

This year's event is slated to begin with the fencing match at 2 p.m. After two hours of bouts, alums, current team members and others will head to a dinner and reception at 4 p.m.

"It is always one of my favorite events of the year and everyone involved in the program is excited," said Volkommer-Lynch. "We had a great response for the event this year and hope to have a record turnout."

Approximately 60 people are expected to attend the match and dinner.

Volkommer has more than 425 wins in her career and has guided the Ducks into competition more than 700 times. The Ducks have won team medals 16 times at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships, and have won the last three Eastern Women's Fencing Conference team epee titles. Stevens has had three EWFC individual champs and the team appeared in the NCAA Championships twice – 1982 and 1984. A remarkable 110 student-athletes have competed in the NCAA Regional Championships since 1983 and more than 90 times a Stevens team member or coach has received All-EWFC honors since 2001.

Seventeen Ducks have been named All-NIWFA and Volkommer has been named Coach of the Year twice, while six student-athletes find themselves in the Stevens Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2013-14 Ducks have gotten off to a strong start, going 7-3 during the 2013 portion of the schedule. After being off for finals and winter break, the Ducks will return to competitive action Saturday, January 18 at the Army Invitational.
