WEST POINT, N.Y. (January 18, 2014) – Senior standout
Briana Nieradka set the all-time wins record to highlight a remarkable performance for women's fencing at the Army Invitational Saturday in West Point, N.Y.
Nieradka broke the previous record of 223 wins held by 2013 grad
Krystal Perkins and now currently has 233 career victories. The veteran turned in a perfect 14-0 mark in epee on the day to pace the Ducks.
Overall the epee squad went 42-3, with junior
Sienna Batzli going 14-0 as well, and sophomore
Deanna Quackenbush turning in an 11-1 ledger.
Leading the foil squad was sophomore
Caroleen Chen who went a flawless 13-0 and junior
Taia Harrison who joined Batzli and Nieradka with a 14-0 record. In addition, sophomore
Jane Cruz had a nice day with a 12-1 mark for the foil unit. Senior
Laura Cerrito also won a bout for Stevens, making her the first Duck in program history to win a bout in all three weapons.
Leading the sabre team was sophomore
Zoe To who went 11-1 and senior
Clara Luneke who was 8-3.
Overall, Stevens went 111-24 on the day in individual bouts and 5-0 as a team. The Ducks downed Army, 21-6, Swarthmore, 24-3, Queens College, 23-4, CCNY, 20-7 and Hunter College, 23-4. The five victories push the Ducks' record to 12-3 overall.
Stevens will host its annual Alumnae Match Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. More than 50 alums are expected to come to Hoboken to participate in a celebration of the 40th year of women's fencing and women's sports at Stevens.
