Rowan Downs Field Hockey; Ducks Host Ithaca Saturday in Key E8 Showdown

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 16, 2014) – The Rowan University field hockey team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 7-1 Thursday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Rowan moves to 10-3 with the win, while Stevens falls to 6-10.

The Ducks controlled the early going and despite the lopsided final held a 23-21 margin in total shots and a 17-13 edge in penalty corners, generating a plethora of close calls and quality chances.

Rowan notched the first two goals of the game, the first coming at 5:19 and the second at 22:19, to take a 2-0 advantage with 12:45 left in the opening period.

Stevens was able to get on the board with 8:09 remaining in the first when sophomore midfielder Nolie Prouty (Glendora, Calif.) tallied her fourth following a scrum off the right post.

After seeing its lead trimmed in half, Rowan ended the first half strong, scoring three times over a span of just 3:11 of game time to take a 5-1 lead into the intermission.

The Profs tallied twice (50:31, 54:31) in the second half for the final margin of 5-1. Freshman goalie Carly DeMarco (Gloucester City, N.J.) was peppered with Stevens shots all match but played well, making 13 saves to earn the win. Junior Johanna James (Gloucester City, N.J.) led Rowan with three goals and one assist for a total of seven points.

The Ducks put 14-of-23 shots on goal during the contest and were led by Prouty with two points and junior Erin Silvestri (Beverly, Mass.) who notched seven shots on goal and a defensive save.

Stevens will now turn its attention towards a key Empire 8 showdown at the DeBaun Athletic Complex Saturday against rival Ithaca College. The two teams are currently tied for fourth in the conference standings at 3-3. At the end of the regular season, the top four teams in the conference will earn berths to the Empire 8 Championship hosted by the regular-season champion. Saturday's contest – scheduled for an 11 a.m. start – will be broadcast live via www.stevensducks.com and is part of Homecoming 2014.
