Women’s Volleyball Battles NYU to Five-Set Win

NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 22, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team traveled across the Hudson River and took down New York University in five sets on Wednesday evening. With the fifth-straight win, Stevens is now 24-4 on the season.

The Ducks came away with the victory, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-9, and served exceptionally well with 14 aces. Both teams recorded 49 kills on the night, while Stevens was plus-eight in aces and NYU held the same edge in total blocks (11 to 3).

Sophomore Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) paced the Ducks in kills and digs with 16 and 19, respectively. Tobin also finished the match with a game-high 16.5 points.

Freshman Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) tallied 14 points on a match-best five aces with eight kills and 12 digs. Junior Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) contributed nine kills from the middle.

Senior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) dished out 39 assists to go along with eight digs and four kills, while classmate Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) posted six kills, three aces and three digs.

Sophomore Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) chipped in three kills, aces and digs, while freshman Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) tallied 18 digs and two aces.

Junior Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) added eight digs.

NYU (17-12) was led by Gigi Morally with 14 kills, MaTia Hughes with 42 assists and Brooke Tannahill with 23 digs. Nicole Frias also notched 11 kills with six total blocks.

Stevens' next three matches this weekend are all against Empire 8 Conference foes. The Ducks head to Utica College on Friday and then travel down to Ithaca College for a tri-match with Nazareth College on the 25th.
