Another Split for Women’s Volleyball on Saturday

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 1, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team split its matches for the second-straight day at the NYS Regional Challenge on Saturday in Canavan Arena.

Stevens (29-6) began the day with a five-set loss to the University of Rochester but bounced back to sweep Montclair State University in the nightcap.

Stevens suffered its first back-to-back losses of the season with a five-set defeat to the University of Rochester in the Ducks' first match of the day. The Ducks alternated set wins with Rochester throughout the five-set contest, 25-15, 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13.
 
The Ducks compiled 54 kills with a .266 hitting percentage, compared to 51 kills and a .171 clip from the Yellow Jackets. A deciding factor in the match came by way of serving and receiving errors, as Stevens committed 24 and Rochester just 13.
 
Junior Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) led the Ducks in kills with 13 on 22 swings for an impressive .591 hitting percentage, which was a match-high. Thomas also added three blocks.
 
Classmate Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) swung at a .435 clip with 10 kills and no errors, while sophomore Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) also notched 10 kills and hit .320. Youngman added four digs, while Sciarra chipped in nine digs.
 
Another junior, Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) handed out 40 assists to go along with five digs and two aces, while freshman Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) established a match-best with 25 digs.
 
Senior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) added seven kills, four aces, four blocks and two digs, while junior Kristen Herchenroder (Breezy Point, N.Y.) registered 10 digs and six kills.
 
Freshman Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) finished the match with six kills, four digs and three blocks. Senior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) handed out nine assists in a set played.

The Ducks took complete control of the match against Montclair right from first serve and cruised to a straight-sets victory, 25-19, 25-17, 25-11, to snap their two-match losing streak.

Stevens hit .333 in the contest on 46 kills and 11 errors in 105 attempts. The Ducks also notched seven total blocks (six assists, four solo). Montclair was held to a .070 hitting percentage, and only hit above .100 in one set.

Shelton dished out 40 more assists against the Red Hawks to maneuver the offense. Tobin led the way with 13 kills to go along with six digs, while Evans hit .455 with 12 kills on 22 swings. She also added six digs.

Thomas continued her stellar play on Saturday with seven kills and two solo blocks. Sciarra chipped in eight kills with four digs and two blocks.

Hall rounded out the match with six kills and a .333 hitting percentage with three blocks. Horner tallied 14 digs defensively.

Stevens is finished now finished with regular season play and will host the Empire 8 Conference Championship on November 7-8 in Canavan. The Ducks take on Houghton College in the semifinals at 3 p.m. on the 7th and, if victorious, will play the winner of Nazareth College and Ithaca College at 4 p.m. on the 8th.
