HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 22, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team never trailed against Brooklyn College Saturday en route to a 64-49 win in the 2014-15 home opener.
The win puts Stevens' record at 2-1 while Brooklyn fell to 1-2.
Junior
Kaitlyn Astel led the Ducks with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds while junior
Dylan Krause added 14 points. Junior
Miranda Ripken led Stevens with four assists. As a team, the Ducks shot a season-high 46.3 percent from the field and outrebounded their opponent for the third straight game.
The Ducks controlled the tempo to start the game, opening up a 13 point lead midway through the first half off a layup from sophomore
Brittany Washington. Brooklyn responded with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to four, but a layup from Ripken with three and a half minutes to go in the half brought the lead back to six.
After an Astel jumper extended the lead to eight, Brooklyn's defense took control and shutout the Ducks for the final two minutes as Stevens took a five point lead into the break.
The Ducks opened the second half on a 5-0 run before gaining a 12 point lead off a jumper from Astel with 14 minutes remaining in regulation. Brooklyn was able to respond with a 6-0 run of their own, but three pointers from junior
Megan Petuskey and Krause brought the lead back to 12.
Stevens continued to hold that double-digit advantage, opening up its biggest lead of the game of 20 with three and a half minutes left off a Krause free throw. A Petuskey jumper one minute later extended the lead to 22 before the Ducks closed out the 15 point victory.
The Ducks will return to action on Tuesday when they host Centenary College at 6 p.m. in Canavan Arena. Live stats and stream will be provided on stevensducks.com.
