Baruch Downs Men’s Basketball; NYU Next for Ducks on Saturday

NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 3, 2014) – Baruch College defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 63-47 Wednesday night in a non-conference men's basketball game in Manhattan.

The loss drops the Ducks to 3-4 on the season, while Baruch improves to 3-1. The Bearcats were also able to snap a four-game skid dating back to 2012 against the Ducks.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead on the back up of a layup from senior forward Kenny Gan, the Ducks struggled mightily from the field in the first. After another Gan layup made it 5-4 Baruch with17:02 to go in the opening half, the Bearcats (3-1) went on a 14-2 run to take a 19-6 edge with 10:24 left.

A made jumper from freshman guard Austin Marchese slowed the hosts momentum a bit, and a strong Stevens defense was able to hold Baruch to just seven points over the final 9:24 of the first, and the Ducks headed into the locker room trailing 26-12.

Stevens started fast in the second. Sophomore guard Patrick Barron opened the half with a three-pointer thanks to an assist from Marchese and the Ducks were quickly back within 11. After a Baruch make, freshman guard Chris Cosgrove nailed another three-pointer to get the Ducks within 10 points, and at 16:15, Barron found Gan for a pair. The Bearcats made 1-of-2 at the line on their next trip down the court, and a Barron layup thanks to a setup from senior forward Patrick Sabatino made it a 29-22 game with 15:38 in the second.

Seven would be as close as the Ducks would get as a 14-4 run from Baruch made it 43-26 with 10:48 remaining and the hosts were able to seal the win. The Bearcat lead climbed as high as 23, but Stevens closed the game strong, ending on a 10-3 run.

Gan led the Ducks with eight points and six rebounds, and Barron finished with seven points and five boards. Sophomore forward Otis Osman notched five points and four boards for Stevens.

The Ducks shot 32.7 percent from the field (17-for-52) and were just 4-for-25 from long range. They were 9-for-17 from the free-throw line (52.9 percent), racking up eight assists and five steals as a team.

Baruch held a 38-33 margin on the glass and shot 46.0 percent from the field (23-for-50). The Bearcats were 6-for-15 from deep (40.0 percent). Junior guard Raymond De La Cruz and senior guard Granville Gittens combined for 29 points and 14 boards to lead Baruch.

Stevens will look to end the 2014 portion of its schedule Saturday when it visits cross-river rival New York University at 4 p.m. Live links to follow all the action can be accessed via www.stevensducks.com.
