HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 1, 2014) – The Montclair State University women's lacrosse team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 12-10 Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
The first half was back-and-forth with the opening period resulting in a five goals for each side. Junior
Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.) started the scoring just 1:06 into the game as the two teams traded scores over the first 4:51 of game time.
Senior
Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and freshman
Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.) scored back-to-back goals to give the Ducks a 4-2 margin with 20:32 remaining in the first, but the Red Hawks ended the half scoring three of the final four markers to tie the game heading into the break.
MSU (2-0) took a lead early in the second half, but Hughes knotted things at seven apiece with 24:53 left. The Red Hawks tallied the next two goals to open an 8-6 advantage at 18:57, and after sophomore
Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) pulled the Ducks within one, MSU ran off four-straight goals to make it a 12-7 game with less than eight minutes remaining.
Stevens came back to tally the final three goals, creating a tight 12-10 contest with 1:47 left, but the Red Hawks received a key save from freshman goalie
Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, N.J.) with 1:32 on the clock to essentially seal the win.
Kalbian and sophomore
Mackenzie Swartout (Rochester, N.Y.) were responsible for the final three Stevens goals of the afternoon.
Kalbian played a marvelous all-around game for Stevens with three goals, seven draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Hughes had two goals and one assist, and Wilcox had one goal, one assist, three draw controls and three ground balls. Swartout finished with two goals on three shots, and sophomore
Amanda Kowalski (Sparta, N.J.) scooped up a trio of ground balls. Sophomore
Jaimie Mastrogiacomo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) recorded an assist and three ground balls, and senior goalie
Sarah Prall (Lansdale, Pa.) had six saves and four ground balls.
Junior
Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, N.J.) had six points on four goals and two assists to pace Montclair, and junior
Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, N.J.) tallied three goals. Tepper made 12 saves to earn the win in goal.
Stevens (1-2) ended with a 27-22 edge in shots, and MSU had a 28-26 margin in ground balls. Stevens won 14-of-24 draws and each team had 25 total fouls. The Ducks were 2-for-8 on free-position shots, and the Red Hawks went 3-for-5.
Stevens will return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when it hosts FDU-Florham at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
