Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 19, 2014) – Drew University defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 12-8 Wednesday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in a non-conference women's lacrosse game.

With the win, Drew improves to 4-2 overall, while the loss drops the Ducks to 2-5 as they head into Empire 8 play Saturday at Hartwick College.

After freshman midfielder Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.) started the scoring for Stevens, Drew ran off three-straight tallies to open a 3-1 margin with 21:14 left in the first half. The Ducks responded, going on a 3-0 run of their own to regain the advantage at 4-3, getting a marker from senior attack Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and two from sophomore midfielder Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).

The Rangers tied things at four-all with 6:06 remaining in the opening period, but two scores separated by just 1:15 of game time from sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Swartout (Rochester, N.Y.) made it 6-4 Stevens.

Drew tied the score at six before Wilcox's third goal of the first pushed the Ducks ahead (7-6) with less than one minute remaining in the half. From that point, the Rangers went on a 5-0 run to bridge the first and second half, opening an 11-7 lead that Stevens could not recover from. Junior midfielder Krysta Cento (Garden City, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist in the spurt for Drew.

Rafferty pulled the Ducks within three at 11-8 with 7:46 to play, but Drew answered 1:09 later, and the Ducks were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way.

Stevens finished with a 36-25 edge in shots, but Drew had a 25-20 margin in ground balls. Drew committed 30 fouls compared to just 15 for the Ducks, and Stevens won 16 of the 23 draw controls on the afternoon.

Drew finished the game 5-for-6 on free-position shots, while the Ducks were just 2-for-14. A big reason being the play of Ranger goalie Jadin James (Farmington, Conn.) who made 19 saves on the day. Senior goalie Sarah Prall (Lansdale, Pa.) made six saves in the loss for Stevens.

Wilcox finished with three goals and one assist as well as two ground balls and two draw controls to lead Stevens. Rafferty had two tallies, one assist and two draw controls, while Kalbian had one goal, one assist, seven draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior attack Andrea Dragoni (Easton, Pa.) had a pair of nice assists, and freshman Mariel Haubrich (Ocean City, N.J.) notched three draw controls and a helper. Junior defender Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.)  had two ground balls and two caused turnovers, with Swartout notching two goals for the Ducks.

Cento had four tallies and one assist to lead Drew, with junior Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, N.J.) scoring three times and dishing out a pair of assists. Freshman Morgan Mason (Cranford, N.J.) had two goals, two assists, three ground balls and two draw controls.

The Empire 8-opener vs. Hartwick for the Ducks is set to begin at 1 p.m. in Oneonta.
