ONEONTA, N.Y. (March 22, 2014) – Four players finished with three or more points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 win at Hartwick College in the Empire 8 opener for each school Saturday.
In addition to the widespread scoring, freshman
Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.) controlled 11 draws to tie Stevens' single-game record. Kalbian and the Ducks corralled 18 of the 25 draws on the day.
With the win, Stevens improves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Hartwick falls to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8.
The hosts jumped in front 2-0, but the Ducks were able to put together a solid half and to take a 7-5 lead into the intermission.
Junior
Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.) started the Stevens scoring with a free-position tally 8:35 into the game to get within one, and 40 seconds later, senior
Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) recorded the equalizer.
Sophomore
Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) found sophomore
Jaimie Mastrogiacomo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) for a 3-2 Stevens lead less than a minute after the Rafferty marker, but the Hawks scored back-to-back goals to take a 4-3 edge.
Rafferty found Hughes with 15:13 to play in the first, knotting the score at four-all, and after Hartwick went on top 5-4, the Ducks closed the opening period with three-straight tallies. Mastrogiacomo found Wilcox for her 23rd score of the year, Rafferty pocketed her 19th on a free-position attempt and freshman
Mariel Haubrich (Ocean City, N.J.) put one in unassisted.
Stevens' run went to 5-0 by scoring the first two goals of the second half to open a 9-5 cushion, but three-straight Hawk goals trimmed the margin to one (9-8) with a shade over 20 minutes to play. The two Duck goals early in the second were tallied by Wilcox with assists going to Mastrogiacomo and Haubrich.
Leading by just one, the Ducks were able to get a couple stops and regained a two-goal margin at 10-8 with a free-position goal from Kalbian
. Kalbian notched her second of the game just 37 seconds later to make it 11-8 Ducks with 14:43 remaining.
Hartwick was able to get within two after a tally with 8:47 on the clock, but the Ducks answered 41 seconds later when Hughes came through with her third goal of the game. Stevens was able to keep the Hawks off the board the rest of the way, and received goals from Rafferty and freshman
Caroline DeLuca (Sayville, N.Y.) for the final score of 14-9.
Wilcox finished with three goals and two assists, as did Rafferty. Wilcox added five draw controls, and Rafferty had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Hughes had a three scores and a ground ball, and Mastrogiacomo tallied once, dished out two assists, picked up two ground balls and caused two turnovers. Kalbian had two goals, a career-high 11 draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover, while Haubrich had a goal and an assist. Junior
Courtney Lee (Brookeville, Md.) had two ground balls, and junior
Gabriela Sanchez (Auburn, N.H.) scooped up a trio of GB's.
Freshman
Janelle Welkie (Hershey, Pa.) and senior
Sarah Prall (Lansdale, Pa.) each played 30 minutes in goal, making a total of four saves.
Hartwick was led by three scores each from junior
Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and sophomore
Kia Ference (Schenectady, N.Y.).
Stevens ended with a 30-16 edge in shots, and each team committed 19 total turnovers. The Ducks also held a 24-13 margin in shots on goal and held a 19-18 in ground balls.
Next up for the Ducks will be a pair of conference road contests next Friday and Satruday at Utica College and Elmira College. Friday's game at Utica is set for a 4 p.m. start.
