Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 18, 2014) – The nationally-ranked No. 16 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 13-6 Friday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in a matchup of conference unbeatens.
With the loss, the Ducks drop to 4-1 in the conference and 6-7 overall. Ithaca moves to 9-4 overall and 5-0 in the Empire 8 and improves its winning streak to eight.
Ithaca scored the game's first six goals to take a 6-0 advantage with 8:42 to play in the first period as sophomore
Molly Fischer (Aquinnah, Mass.) and senior
Katie Long (Ithaca, N.Y.) each tallied a pair.
Senior attack
Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) was able to get Stevens on the board with 1:07 left in the opening period, and 27 ticks into the second half, junior attack
Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.) found the back of the net to make it a four-goal game. Sophomore midfielder
Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) assisted on Stevens' first two markers.
Ithaca's
Riley Marion (Dartmouth, Mass.) netted a pair in a 3-0 Bomber spurt to open a 9-2 margin, but the Ducks would not go away quietly, pushing the Bombers for the entire 60 minutes.
Back-to-back scores for freshman midfielder
Caroline DeLuca (Sayville, N.Y.) and Hughes pulled the Ducks within five goals at the 10:50 mark, and after an Ithaca goal made it 10-5, two more Duck goals sliced the Ithaca lead to 10-6 with 5:18 left. Freshman midfielder
Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.) and Wilcox were responsible for the Stevens goals.
The Ducks continued to press the Bombers but could get no closer, and the guests were able to score the final three goals to earn the 13-6 win.
Ithaca ended with a 31-21 edge in shots, holding a 22-13 margin in shots on cage. The Bombers finished with a 21-16 margin in ground balls, but the Ducks completed the contest with an 11-10 margin in draw controls.
Wilcox led the Ducks with three points on two goals and one assist, also adding five draw controls to her line. Junior defender
Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had an assist, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Rafferty notched one goal, one assist, one ground ball and one draw control, while Hughes had two goals. Kalbian had a goal, two draw controls and a ground ball.
Freshman
Janelle Welkie (Hershey, Pa.) took the loss in goal for Stevens, making four stops in 30 minutes. Junior
Mel Welcome (Winsted, Conn.) tallied five denials in 25-plus minutes in the second half.
Sophomore
Ally Runyon (Fairport, N.Y.), Marion and Fischer all scored three times for the Bombers, with freshman goalie
Emily Ross (Stony Brook, N.Y.) making six saves to earn the win.
