Nazareth Edges Women’s Lacrosse in OT, 12-11

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 26, 2014) – Despite four goals from sophomore midfielder Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and four points from senior attack Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.), the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team dropped an overtime heartbreaker at Nazareth College, 12-11, Saturday afternoon.
 
The loss drops the Ducks to 4-2 in the Empire 8 and 7-8 overall heading into the regular-season finale at St. John Fisher College Sunday. The Ducks have clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Championship as have Ithaca College, Fisher and Nazareth.
 
After falling behind 1-0 early, the Ducks were able to take a 3-1 lead 3:52 into the game on the back of two goals from junior attack Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.) and one from Wilcox. Freshman midfielder Mariel Haubrich (Ocean City, N.J.) was credited with assists on two of the first three Duck scores.
 
Nazareth answered with three of its own to regain the lead, but five unanswered goals from Stevens made it 8-4 with 8:49 to play in the first half. Wilcox scored the first and fourth in the run, Rafferty netted two and three and freshman midfield Caroline DeLuca (Sayville, N.Y.) was responsible for the last.
 
Naz (8-7, 5-2 Empire ) tallied a pair late in the first half to get within two at 8-6, but Haubrich rang the bell with 3:23 left to put a wrap on the first half scoring and send the Ducks into the break with a 9-6 lead.
 
The Ducks would only find the back of the net twice in the second half and overtime. Sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Swartout (Rochester, N.Y.) pocketed the first to give the Ducks a 10-7 margin with 9:03 left, and Wilcox scored less than two minutes later to make it an 11-8 contest.
 
The Golden Flyers fought back late, scoring three goals in the final 4:48 to send the game to OT. The equalizer came from sophomore midfielder Carly Gates (Vestal, N.Y.) with 32 seconds on the clock.
 
The game-winner came 4:03 into the overtime when junior Suzie Gray (West Monroe, N.Y.) found the back of the net thanks to an assist from senior attack Kelsey McNaboe (Syracuse, N.Y.).
 
Nazareth finished with a 27-23 edge in shots and limited the Ducks to five attempts in the second half. The Golden Flyers held a 13-10 margin in ground balls, but Stevens held a 19-8 cushion in draw controls.
 
Wilcox added three draw controls to her four scores, and Raffertty had a game-high six draw controls in addition to two goals and two assists. Hughes finished with a pair, and Haubrich had one goal, two assists, two ground balls and a draw control. Freshman midfielder Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.) finished with five draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior defenders Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Garbiela Sanchez (Auburn, N.H.) each had a pair of caused turnovers, with Ingersoll getting a pair of ground balls as well. Junior defender Courtney Lee (Brookeville, Md.) recorded two ground balls and two draw controls.
 
The Ducks will close out the regular season at St. John Fisher Sunday at 12 p.m.
