Women’s Volleyball Splits Opener at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. (August 29, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team splits its 2014 opener at Salisbury University on Friday evening. Stevens fell to Salisbury in its first match but rebounded to top Clark University in the night cap.

Salisbury 3, Stevens 0

Salisbury swept the Ducks in the opening match, 26-24, 27-25, 25-19. The Ducks led late in set one, 24-20, only to watch the Seagulls rally off the final six points of the set.

Sophomore Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) was the lone Stevens player to reach double-digit kills with 10 and completed her double-double with 10 digs. Junior Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) and freshman Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) each tallied six kills in the loss, while Evans added six digs and Thomas notched five blocks.

Senior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) handed out a team-high 25 assists to go along with eight digs and three blocks, while freshman Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) paced the Ducks defensively with 15 digs in her first collegiate match.

Senior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) chipped in four kills, three service aces and three blocks.

Stevens struggled offensively, hitting just .057, while Salisbury hit at a .160 clip. The Ducks did, however, register 16 block assists in the loss.

The Ducks evened their record on the day with a four-set win over Clark, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, and used 12 aces to prevail. After a sluggish first set offensively that ended with a -.065 hitting percentage, Stevens bounced back and hit atleast .212 in the final three sets.

Tobin once again finished with 10 kills and added 11 digs for her second double-double on the evening. Hall hit .250 in the match to go along with nine kills, six digs, four aces and a pair of blocks.

Sophomore Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) also reached nine kills in the win with three aces, while Castillo dished out 32 assists with six digs.

Horner notched her first collegiate 20-dig performance and added three assists. Sophomore Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) contributed six kills, 11 digs and two blocks.

Stevens plays two more matches tomorrow against Mount Alyosius College and Swarthmore College. The Ducks take on Mount Aloysius at 10 a.m. and then wrap up the weekend against Swarthmore at 2 p.m.
