Aces Wild for Women’s Volleyball at Springfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 6, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball program splits its matches on the final day of the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday and are now 6-2 on the season.

Stevens notched an impressive 32 services aces on the day, including 24 in a four-set victory over Rivier University to start things off on Saturday. In the four-set loss to Amherst College, the Ducks tallied eight more aces to bring their team total to 91 on the season in 27 sets played.

Stevens 3, Rivier 1

The Ducks recorded their sixth consecutive victory in Saturday's opener over Rivier, 25-20, 25-11, 23-25, 25-9. After the 24 aces, Stevens also registered 63 digs, seven total blocks and hit at a .264 clip (38K, 10E, 106A).

Freshman Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) nearly reached a triple-double against the Raiders with an incredible 11 aces to go along with 10 kills and seven digs. Sophomore Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) produced a similar stat line as Evans with 13 digs, 11 kills and seven aces, and hit .257.

Senior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) controlled the offense with 25 assists and added 10 digs, four kills, three blocks and two aces. Senior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) accounted for the other four aces in the match and added three kills on a .429 hitting percentage with two digs and blocks a piece.

Sophomore Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) contributed a .320 hitting percentage on nine kills in 25 swings, while freshman Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) reached a personal-best 25 digs in her early Stevens career and chipped in three assists.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Horner was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Amherst 3, Stevens 1

Stevens had its winning streak snapped by Amherst in the semifinals of the tournament, 25-15, 25-10, 26-28, 25-23. The Ducks struggled offensively, hitting just .102 overall, but amassed 70 digs and 11 total blocks in the set back.

Tobin recorded her second double-double of the day with 20 digs and 10 kills, while Evans came up just short with 15 digs, seven kills and three blocks.

Hall led Stevens with a .357 hitting percentage with seven kills on 14 attempts. She also added two aces, digs and blocks.

Junior Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) tallied seven blocks and six kills, while junior Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) stepped in at setter and dished out 22 assists with six digs.

Castillo handed out 12 assists in three sets with six digs, while Horner picked up 19 more digs and scored on five aces.

Junior Kristen Herchenroder (Breezy Point, N.Y.) chipped in three kills on eight attempts.

The Ducks compete in their first Empire 8 Conference match of the season against Hartwick College as part of a tri-match with Kean University on September 13 in Canavan Arena. Stevens and Hartwick square off at 1 p.m. and the evening concludes with Kean at 5 p.m.
