Women’s Basketball Stays Undefeated In E8 With Win Over Naz

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 10, 2015) – Four different players scored in double-figures Saturday as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball beat Nazareth College 69-52 for their 10th straight win.

The win rose Stevens' record to 10-1 while Nazareth fell to 7-5.

Astel led the Ducks with 23 points in what was her seventh straight double-figure scoring game. Junior Miranda Ripken chipped-in with 12 while sophomore Brittany Washington and junior Dylan Krause each added 10. The Ducks held Nazareth to 32.7 percent shooting from the field and forced 20 turnovers.

After building a two point lead through the first four minutes, the Ducks rattled-off a 6-0 run comprised of a jumper from Astel and two from Washington. Nazareth responded with a 7-0 run to pull within one midway through the half, but a three pointer from sophomore Erica Guketlov ended the run and put Stevens up by 4 with under seven minutes to go.

Both teams went back and forth for the next six minutes before a three from Nazareth put the Golden Eagles up three with one minute remaining. Stevens got one bucket back off a jumper from freshman Anna Toke before a pair of free throws from Astel sent the game into the half deadlocked.

The tie marked just the second time all season the Ducks did not have a lead going into halftime.

Led by six points from Krause, Stevens opened the second half on a 10-3 run to take a 39-32 lead with 15:31 to go. Nazareth closed the gap to four two minutes later, but a pair of free throws from Krause brought the lead back to seven.

The Ducks continued to build their lead from there, going up 14 off a three from Astel at the seven minute mark before going up 18 with five minutes to go off a layup from Ripken. Nazareth was able to cut the defecit to 11 with 90 seconds remaining, but it's as close as they would get the rest of the game.

The Ducks will return to action Monday when they host The College of New Jersey at 6 p.m. in Canavan Arena.
