Ithaca Snaps Women’s Basketball’s Win Streak

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 16, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's team suffered its second loss of the season Friday, falling 75-68 to Ithaca College in Hoboken.
 
The loss snapped Stevens' (11-2) 11 game win streak, their longest since winning 12 straight during the 2007-08 season. The win was Ithaca's (10-3) fourth straight.
 
Junior Kaitlyn Astel led all scorers with 25 points and also added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Miranda Ripken added nine points and six rebounds while freshman Megan Brown and sophomore Brittany Washington each pulled-down nine rebounds.
 
A layup from Astel cut the Ithaca lead to one point seven minutes into the game, but Ithaca responded with a layup and a three to go up by six. The Bombers retained the lead for most of the half before a jumper from Astel with 40 seconds remaining tied the game at 30.
 
Ithaca answered with a jumper 15 second later, but a pair of free throws from Astel with six seconds to go knotted the game at 32 going into the break.
 
The Bombers opened the second half on a15-4 run over the first three and a half minutes to go up 11 points. Astel stopped the momentum with a jumper thirty seconds later, but Ithaca responded with 10 straight points to go up 19.
 
Facing its biggest deficit of the season, Stevens showed fight with a 7-0 run over the next three minutes highlighted by a three-point-play from sophomore Daphne Ginn. Ithaca got one point back off a free throw, but made shots from junior Megan Petuskey and freshman Anna Toke brought the Ducks to within nine with eight minutes to go.
 
Both teams went back-and-forth over the next five minutes before Brown followed up a block on the defensive end with a layup to put the Ducks within five. Stevens got to within four off a layup from Astel, but eight made free throws from Ithaca over the last minute closed the door on a comeback.
 
The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Elmira College at 3 p.m. at Canavan Arena.
