HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 3, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team saw 12 different players score Saturday as the team won its seventh straight in a 68-42 rout over Houghton College in Hoboken.
The victory gives the Ducks (7-1) their longest win streak since the team won nine straight during the 2010-2011 season. The loss dropped Houghton to 3-7.
Freshman
Sydney Darby led the Ducks with a career high 12 points while junior
Kaitlyn Astel hit double figures for the fifth straight game with 11. Sophomore
Erica Guketlov, junior
Miranda Ripken, and freshman
Megan Brown each chipped in with eight.
Brown and Astel added seven and six rebounds respectively while the Ducks shot 42.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.
Stevens came out aggressively with a 9-0 run capped by a pair of field goals from Astel and Ripken. Houghton was able to respond by pulling to within two seven minutes into the half, but three pointers from Guketlov and Darby ended the run and put the Ducks up by eight.
The Ducks continued to keep the pressure on before gaining their first double-digit lead of the game with a jumper from Ripken during the six minute mark. A three point play from Astel with four minutes to go brought the lead to 15 while a jumper from Darby with two minutes remaining gave the Ducks the 17 point lead they would take into the break.
The momentum continued to favor the Ducks in the second half as Brown's layup eight minutes in ballooned the Stevens lead to 19. A jumper from Darby one minute later took the lead to 21 before another Brown layup made it 24.
Houghton was unable to muster any significant answer allowing the Ducks to go up by 27 with three minutes remaining with a jumper from freshman
Ruth Waters. The lead was more than enough as Stevens cruised through the final minutes en route to the win.
The Ducks will continue their home stand Tuesday when they host Utica College at 6 p.m. in Canavan Arena.
