ALFRED, N.Y. (January 31, 2015) – Despite 34 points from sophomore
Patrick Barron, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team dropped an Empire 8 Conference road decision to Alfred University, 78-76 Saturday night.
The loss dropped Stevens to 9-10 (6-5) while Alfred rose to 11-7 (5-5).
Barron shot 11-17 from the field including 6-9 from three to establish a new career high in points. Senior
Kenny Gan added the double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, while senior
Patrick Sabatino added 12 points and three boards.
As a team, the Ducks shot 51.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.
Alfred jumped-out to a four point in the opening minutes, but a three from Barron in the 17 minute mark capped a 5-0 run and gave Stevens the slim lead. Both teams went back-and-forth over the next six minutes before an 8-0 run put the Ducks up seven midway through the half.
The Ducks built the lead to 12 with a three from Barron with six minutes remaining, then to 13 with a free throw from junior
Alex Lorenz with one minute to go, but an Alfred layup in the closing seconds cut the Stevens lead to 11 going into the break.
A Sabatino layup two minutes into the second half ballooned the Stevens lead to 15, but Alfred answered with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to six. The Ducks maintained at least a five point lead over the next five minutes before Alfred made its comeback run.
Down by three midway through the half, Alfred tied the game on a three pointer with just over eight minutes to go. The Ducks regained a one-point-lead with just over three minutes to go, but a 5-2 Alfred run over the final two minutes cemented the loss.
The Ducks will be back in action next Saturday when they host Hartwick College at 4 p.m. at Canavan Arena.
