ROCHESTER, N.Y. (OCTOBER 11, 2015) – Freshman
Zisi Komar scored her second overtime winner of the season to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team past Nazareth College 3-2 Sunday.
The Ducks move to 9-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Empire 8 Conference with the victory, while Nazareth fell to 9-2-2 and 3-1-1 in the E8. The win saw Stevens run its unbeaten streak to seven straight contests.
Neither side had many opportunities in the first 19 minutes, as Stevens did not attempt a shot and the Golden Flyers sent their only shot wide. In the 20
th minute, Naz was whistled for a foul in the box, and Stevens was awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Allison Dobles was able to stop the attempt, but Komar took a pass from junior
Raba Nassif and buried the rebound.
Dobles made a pair of stops two minutes later on Nassif and sophomore
Sammy Mount. Nazareth put a shot on sophomore
Lindsey Mahnken in the 36
th minute but she was able to make the save. Senior
Kristen Goncalves had a pair of chances two minutes later, but one hit the crossbar and the other was blocked.
Nazareth evened the score at the 40:24 mark, when Katie Trainor converted a pass from Courtney Malia. With 55 seconds left in the opening period, Malia sent a corner kick in that was headed into the back of the goal by Nicole Petocchi to give the hosts a 2-1 halftime lead.
Naz opened the second half with a pair of shots that sailed wide. The Ducks tied the match in the 59
th minute when Goncalves took in a feed from classmate
Carly Bean for her fourth tally of the year. Both sides had chances to take the lead with regulation winding down, as Mahnken made a save on Kelsey Moss with 2:43 left. Stevens' best chance came with 1:25 left as freshman
Whitney Brown had an attempt snared by Dobles.
Komar was able to beat the clock in the first extra frame, putting home the game-winner with one tick left on the clock. After a ball went out of bounds, Nassif hurried a corner kick that found the foot of Komar and she deposited it for her team-leading ninth of the season. On September 12, Komar's overtime header from Bean gave the Ducks a 2-1 victory.
Goncalves led the team with five shots, while Nassif fired three of her four shots on goal in addition to her two assists. Mahnken made five saves for her ninth victory of the season.
Dobles made nine saves in the defeat, with Michaela Soules, Paige Sullivan and Jessica Byrnes each notching a pair of shots.
The Ducks will conclude their three-match roadtrip as they travel to Brooklyn College Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.
