Women’s Volleyball Falls To Millikin

HOBOKEN, N.J. (OCTOBER 16, 2015) – Junior Mary Tobin notched 14 kills and 17 digs, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell to Millikin University 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, and 23-25 Friday.
 
The Ducks fell to 13-11 while Millikin improved 16-9.
 
In the opening frame, Stevens was able to pull ahead 22-20, but the visitors closed the set on a 5-1 run. The Ducks were outhit .128-.125 in the set, but only committed five attack errors.
 
After the Big Blue knotted the second set at 10, Stevens turned the tide and rolled off six consecutive points behind the serve of sophomore Brianna Evans and three kills from Tobin. Millikin was able to trim the gap to two points, but a kill from junior Christina Sciarra evened the match at one set. The Ducks hit a staggering .406 while committing only two errors.
 
Stevens grabbed the first two points thanks to back-to-back kills from Sciarra, but the Big Blue scored eight straight, forcing the Ducks into a timeout. The hosts clawed back and a kill by Evans brought to within 9-7, but Millikin notched the next four to go up 13-7. The teams traded points until a visiting attack error moved Stevens to within four, but it they were unable to catch up and Millikin closed out the set on a 3-0 run.
 
A back and forth fourth set saw the Ducks attempt to grab the lead, briefly going up 18-17 on a kill from Evans and an ace from freshman Emily Ferguson. The set go on to be tied at 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22, before Millikin scored two straight to bring up match. The Ducks staved off one match point before a kill from Cortney Bohn ended the match in favor of the visitors.
 
Evans and Sciarra recorded double-doubles, while sophomore Sydni Horner racked up 27 digs over the four sets. Thomas and sophomore Mckenzie Kingsbury combined for 11 kills and three total blocks from the middle position, with senior Catie Shelton dishing out 37 assists.
 
Erin Syversen had 19 kills and 13 digs for Big Blue, while Emily Mihalkanin handed out 55 assists and recorded 15 digs.
 
The Ducks are back in action next Friday when they travel to Hartwick College for an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
