Field Hockey Picks Up Key E8 Win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (OCTOBER 17, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team picked up a key 2-1 Empire 8 Conference win over Utica College Saturday.

The win moved the Ducks record to 9-7 and 4-3 in the E8, while Utica fell to 5-9 and 3-3 in conference play. The victory moved Stevens up to third place in the conference, with Utica droppingto fourth.

Sophomore Victoria Alvarez opened the scoring 8:44 into the contest, flicking a reverse shot over the goalies shoulder. Alvarez received the pass from sophomore Emma Chick, who recorded her first career assist on the play.

Fellow sophomore Katti Thomasian extended the lead to two at the 17:36 mark of the opening frame. Thomasian inserted a corner to senior Dailyn Brook, whose shot was blocked by the Pioneer defense. The rebound bounced out to Thomasian, who deposited the ball into the back of the cage for her sixth tally of the season.

The Pioneers answered back 1:11 later, as Jessica Belt deflected in shot from Collen Dowling, cutting the lead in half. Utica had a chance to tie the game with 6:12 left in the first half, but sophomore Cassidy O'Hearn came up with a huge defensive save to preserve the lead.

Stevens had three opportunities early in the second half, as Taylor Lukins made a pair of defensive saves and a shot by senior Briana DeGraaf rang off the post. The Pioneers got off a pair of shots in the 65th minute, but junior Emily Stukenborg made both saves. The Ducks were able to kill off the final five minutes without allowing a shot.

The Ducks held a 18-7 edge in shots, and a 15-6 margin in penalty corners. Senior Erin Silvestri had four shots, while Alvarez put all three of her shots on goal. Stukenborg made three stops for her ninth win of the season.
