HOBOKEN, N.J. (DECEMBER 5, 2015) – Senior
Miranda Ripken scored 21 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 70-48 win over Vassar College Saturday.
The Ducks moved to 3-2 overall, while Vassar fell to 1-4.
The Brewers jumped out to a 10-7 lead, but that was their only edge of the contest. The Ducks countered with an 11-0 run, capped off with a three-pointer from junior guard
Erica Guketlov. Stevens closed out the first period with a jumper from Ripken.
A layup by Ariella Rosenthal cut the Ducks lead down to eight points, but Stevens countered with a 10-2 spurt over the next three minutes to build the double-digit lead back up for good. The Ducks shot 44.4% from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes, with Ripken knocking down a pair.
The tough defending by the hosts limited the Brewers to a mere eight points, and a three-point shot by senior guard
Kaitlyn Astel boosted the lead to over 20 points. A pair of free throws by junior guard
Daphne Ginn gave Stevens its biggest edge of the afternoon, stretching the gap to 25 points.
After shooting 37.9% from the field in the opening frame, Vassar went cold and only connected on seven shots from the field in the second half. The Ducks held a 51-34 edge on the glass, including 19 offensive boards.
Astel had 13 points, while sophomore
Megan Brown had eight points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Guketlov filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six assists, five steals and four assists.
Rose Serafini led the Brewers with 12 points, while Caitlin Drakeley and Ariella Rosenthal each had nine points.
The Ducks are back in action on Wednesday, taking on DeSales University at 6 p.m.
