Men’s Basketball Drops E8 Game vs. Naz, 80-71

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 20, 2015) – Despite 23 points and nine rebounds from junior forward Alex Lorenz, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team was defeated 80-71 by Nazareth College Friday night in the Canavan Arena.

With the loss, the Ducks drop to 7-8 in the conference and 11-13 overall. Naz improves to 6-9 in the E8 and 10-14, also eliminating Stevens from Empire 8 Tournament contention.

Junior forward Mitch Ford led Nazareth with 24 points and 10 rebounds as four Golden Flyers were in double figures.

Naz jumped out to 5-0 lead, with the Ducks quickly coming back to tie things at five after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Patrick Barron.

However, leading 24-21 with 6:58 to play in the first, the Golden Flyers put together a 17-4 run to close the first half and proel them to the win.

The Ducks came out with strong intensity and fight in the second half, but unlike their last outing in which they erased a 19-point second-half deficit at Ithaca College, they could never get closer than seven points.

A Lorenz layup with 5:02 on the clock made it 62-55, and after a Naz bucket, Lorenz again brought the Ducks within seven, but that was it as Nazareth quickly expanded the margin and closed the doors on a Stevens comeback.

Lorenz scored 23 points on just 13 shots, adding nine boards and two blocks to his line.  Barron scored 16 points and grabbed three rebounds, while senior forward Patrick Sabatino had eight points, five boards and three blocked shots. Senior forward Kenny Gan had six points and nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Chris Cosgrove had a game-high seven assists as well as four points and two steals. Freshman guard Jayson Winick had 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists off the bench.

The Ducks shot 25-for-71 (35.2 percent) from the field and were just 3-for-14 from long range. Each team grabbed 41 rebounds as the Ducks tallied five blocks and five steals as a team.

Naz shot 47.4 percent from the floor and went 23-for-32 at the line.

The Ducks will look to close the regular season with a win on Senior Day over St. John Fisher College. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. with Stevens honoring Sabatino and Gan prior to the contest. Fans unable to make the trip to Hoboken can tune in live via www.stevensducks.com.
