Sieber Leads Baseball to 9-2 Victory Over Drew

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 25, 2015) – Stevens Institute of Technology junior baseball player Nicholas Sieber drove in three runs Wednesday to lead the Ducks to a season opening 9-2 victory over Drew University.

The Ducks struck first in the bottom of the third, loading the bases on a hit by pitch, a single and a Rangers error. Junior Nicholas Sieber drove in Stevens' first run of the season on a fielder's choice, and senior catcher Gregg Nickels singled home another run bringing the lead to 2-0. Junior Zeph Walters then cranked a double to deep center field plating both Sieber and Nickels.

Senior Marc Calleo led off the bottom of the fourth with a single through the left side. After a walks by juniors Jonathan Toro and Jayson Yano, Sieber came up big again singling up the middle, scoring Calleo and Toro. A double-steal and a walk loaded the bases where junior Tyler Bush hit into a fielder's choice to drive in another run.

Stevens escaped a bases loaded one out jam in the top sixth, as sophomore William Korosec got an inning ending double-play to end the threat. The Rangers battled back to scratch across two runs in the top of the seventh inning as senior Steve Kowalski recorded an RBI single and senior Alfred Krause had an RBI groundout.

The Ducks added to their lead after sophomore P.J. Wiegartner rapped a single through the left side scoring sophomore Michael Mula'. Then, after a successfully executed double steal, sophomore Garrett Wells hit into a fielder's choice to knock in for the game's final run.

Senior Peirce Marston started for the Ducks and recorded the win, tossing five solid innings while allowing only four baserunners and striking out two. Junior Ryan Patterson struck out the side in the ninth inning, and Toro reached base all four times he came up to the plate.

Junior Dylan Baxter took the loss for the Rangers, who fell to 0-1, giving up four runs (one earned) and striking out two in three innings.

The Ducks return to action Saturday when they travel to Wayne to take on William Paterson at 12 p.m.
