NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (March 16, 2015) –The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball split a doubleheader with Christopher Newport University, falling in the opener 4-2 before winning the night-cap 5-1 on Wednesday.
Stevens improved to 4-3 on the season and CNU is now 7-6.
Game 1: Christopher Newport 4, Stevens 2 The Ducks put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the second with clutch two-out hitting from senior
Marc Calleo. After a pair of walks to senior
Brian Hennelly and freshman
Tommy Baronner, Calleo delivered a double to left center which plated both runners. In the bottom of the inning, junior Travis Myers drilled a solo shot to left to trim the deficit to one.
The Captains took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth, putting up a three-run inning. A leadoff single by junior Connor Henderson and a Duck error put runners on second and third with no one out. Junior Bryant Lowry delivered a two-run double to left field and that was followed up by an RBI single from junior Josh Moore. Junior
Jayson Yano settled down and escaped the inning without any more harm.
Stevens threatened in the top of the seventh after sophomore
Michael Mule' singled and then moved onto second on a wild pitch. A groundout by sophomore
Garrett Wells advanced Mule' to third, but senior Justin Garber retired the next two hitters to end the seven inning contest.
Yano finished with seven punch-outs over five innings of work while surrendering five hits. Calleo, Mule', juniors
Nick Sieber and
Jonathan Toro all recorded hits for the Ducks.
Junior Blake Ream recorded the win for the Captains, allowing three hits over five innings while striking out four.
Game 2: Stevens 5, Christopher Newport 1 Christopher Newport put a run home in the bottom of opening frame when they loaded the bases on singles by Henderson and Lowry and a Stevens error. The run came across on a passed ball, but junior Robert Robins held the Captains to only one run by recording a strike out to end the inning.
Stevens answered back in the top of the third as Calleo again delivered a double to left center in nearly the identical spot as the game one, this time scoring senior
Ryan Mannello who reached on a walk. Calleo came around to score on hard hit single to right center by Toro. The visitors broke the game open with a two-run double by Yano to deep left-center. Senior
Brian Hennelly followed that up with a sacrifice fly that nearly dropped in for an extra base hit but chased Captains freshman starter Joe Burris. Burris allowed five runs in two and two thirds innings with four strikeouts.
A single by freshman Taylor Loudon, coupled by a walk and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth for the Captains, but Robins induced a pop-up to first and got the final out with help of a sliding catch in foul territory by senior
Gregg Nickels.
Robins scattered six hits over innings while allowing only an unearned run with eight strikeouts. The Ducks were patient at the plate working seven walks off the Captains pitchers.
Stevens is on the road again tomorrow, taking on Washington College at 3:30 p.m. to conclude their Spring Break trip.
