No. 2 Men’s Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Six

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 4, 2015) – The No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to six with a 3-0  set sweep over No. 9 New York University on Wednesday.

The Ducks improved their record to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in the United Volleyball Conference. The Violets fell to 7-5, 2-1 in the UVC.

Stevens jumped out to an early 6-2 lead behind a pair of kills from senior David Evans and two blocks from junior John Eddins. NYU battled back to knot the opening set at 10 after a kill from sophomore Chase Klein and two attacking errors from the Ducks. Stevens went on to score eight of the ten points with senior Ryan Seifert chipping in two kills and three straight aces from junior Alexander Carpenter. After a Violets kill ended that rally, Stevens closed the set registering seven of the final ten points punctuated with a kill from junior Chris Vaughan off a feed from senior Kevin Aeckerle.

The second stanza saw Stevens jump out to a 10-9 lead with the teams combining for seven service errors in the opening portion. The Ducks then went on a 3-0 run with Evans contributing a kill and Aeckerle serving up an ace. After NYU cut into the lead making the set 20-16, the visitors used a kill from Eddins and a pair of attack errors to force set point. Two NYU kills trimmed the deficit to six, but Evans silenced the comeback with a kill.

Evans started the third set off by serving three straight points with help from Seifert and junior Tim Ferriter, who each contributed kills. The Ducks used a .609 hitting percentage to keep the Violets from getting any closer than four points. Both squads attacked the ball well in the third period committing only five errors in 47 swings.

The Ducks outhit their opponents .483-.276 and only committed six attacking errors throughout the contest. Evans led the way with 10 kills and was second with six digs. Seifert contributed nine kills and Aeckerle dished out 21 helpers.

Juniors Colin LaPorte and Nick Benson led NYU with 10 kills each, and sophomore Patrick Merrick had 31 assists in the losing effort.

Stevens is back on the road Saturday taking on a pair of ranked UVC opponents. They will take on No. 11 Elmira College at 2 p.m. before taking on host and No. 13 Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 5 p.m.
